Taking Care of Both Ends of the Leash

I see this all the time online.

Someone says they feed their dog kibble, and suddenly they’re told they should feed fresh food. Then it should be organic. Then the ingredients have to be perfect.

Before long, it can feel like you’re failing your dog if you can’t afford, find the time for, or keep up with all of it.

But there’s another part of this conversation I think we forget sometimes.

What about us?

There will always be something else you “should” be doing

We spend extra money on the “best” food, supplements, treats, beds, toys, and training while sometimes running ourselves completely ragged trying to do everything right.

I love my dogs. Of course I want to give them the best life I reasonably can.

But taking good care of them shouldn’t require us to put ourselves last all the time.

There will always be someone online telling you there’s one more thing you should buy, change, research, feed, train, or worry about.

You don’t have to do everything perfectly.

Sometimes you can just enjoy your dog

Go for a walk together and forget the training agenda for once. Slow down, look around, and just enjoy being outside.

Read a book while your dog curls up next to you. Make yourself a healthy meal and, when appropriate, share a dog-safe bite with your pup. Sit outside for ten minutes and watch your dog explore, sniff, or nap in the sun.

It doesn’t always have to be about fixing, training, tracking, or becoming a better dog parent.

Sometimes you can just enjoy being together.

You matter in this relationship too

Taking care of yourself doesn’t take something away from your dog.

When we’re exhausted or overwhelmed, it can change our routines, patience, interactions, and even how much enjoyment we get from everyday life with our dogs.

I’ve seen that in my own house too. In What My Dogs Taught Me About Stress at Home, I shared how differently Ginger, Thunder, and Wizard respond when things around our house feel more rushed or stressful.

None of us will do everything perfectly.

And I don’t think our dogs need us to.

They need food, veterinary care, safety, enrichment, appropriate exercise, understanding, and all the other things that go into a good life.

But they also get something from the ordinary moments when we stop trying so hard and simply enjoy being with them.

Sometimes taking care of the dog means remembering there are two ends of that leash.
