Making homemade sweet potato dog treats in the dehydrator is one of the simplest dog treat recipes ever. Your dog will love them and shhh… don’t tell them but they are healthy too!

All you need is a few sweet potatoes to make these dog treats. No other ingredients are required.

I add coconut oil, turmeric, and oregano, but aren’t necessary. These three extra ingredients add a level of deliciousness and healthy benefits. As a bonus, you can enjoy them too. They make a great homemade snack for people and dogs.

If you don’t have a dehydrator don’t worry, you can make this dehydrated sweet potato dog treat recipe in the oven too.

But I love my dehydrator for making dog treats and human treats. I recommend buying one, click here for the exact model I have.

Easy DIY sweet potato dog treat recipe

You can easily double or triple this recipe depending on how much you want to make. My dehydrator can easily hold four sweet potatoes.

Ingredients

  • 2 medium sweet potatoes
  • 2 tablespoons organic coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon oregano

Instructions

  1. Peel and wash the sweet potatoes
  2. Slice the sweet potatoes to approximately 1/8 inch. I prefer to use a mandoline, it is quick and consistent. A sharp knife and cutting board work well too.
  3. (OPTIONAL) Toss in a bowl with the organic coconut oil, turmeric, and oregano until all slices are evenly coated.
  4. Place sweet potato slices on dehydrator racks or baking sheets in a single layer with no edges touching.
  5. If using the dehydrator method, set the temperature to 125° and timer for 8-12 hours. Every dehydrator varies, so check your manual for temperature and time settings if you are unsure. Dehydrating time will depend on the thickness of the slices.
  6. If using the oven method, preheat your oven to 300°. Cook for 1-3 hours, flipping halfway through. Cook time will depend on the thickness of the slices.
  7. Sweet potatoes are ready when they are dry and crispy.
  8. If you prefer your sweet potato dog treats to be chewy, then slice thicker and cook for less time. Note these chewy treats should be refrigerated because any moisture left in the sweet potato will make them get moldy otherwise.

Storing dehydrated sweet potato dog treats

Allow your sweet potato dog treats completely cool before storing them in a glass container of your choice.

Because these homemade sweet potato dog treats are fresh without any preservatives, they will last 1-2 weeks or up to 4 weeks in the refrigerator.

Benefits of sweet potato for dogs

Sweet potatoes are a great source of fiber and are rich in vitamins and minerals like:

  • Calcium
  • Iron
  • Potassium
  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin B6
  • Vitamin C

Although these are all great nutrients for your dog, sweet potatoes should be eaten in moderation. Sweet potatoes are considered a starchy carbohydrate which means they turn into sugar when consumed.

In conclusion

My dogs love any kind of treat, they aren’t picky, but I am. Store-bought treats can be filled with ingredients I can not pronounce.

So when I have time, I make fresh treats at home and these DIY sweet potato dog treats are the easiest recipe by far.

Combine homemade sweet potato dog treats with other fresh foods to create a balanced diet. Everything is in moderation.
