Rethinking What “Doing Better” With Your Dog Really Means

Every January used to feel like a list of things I needed to do better with my dogs.

More training.
More walks.
Better food.
More consistency.
Fewer mistakes.

And every year I’d start with good intentions… then life would happen.

Vet visits.

Family stress.

Unexpected expenses.

Grief.

Just real, everyday exhaustion.

And I’d catch myself thinking, “I’m trying so hard… so why do I still feel behind?”

This past year really changed how I look at all of that.

Between Ginger aging, losing Bear, diet changes, supplements, behavior work, and just navigating daily life, I realized something important.

I don’t need bigger goals.

I need better ones.

Goals that make life feel calmer, not crazier.

I stopped trying to be the perfect dog mom

For a long time, “doing better” seemed to mean doing more.

More training sessions.

More activities.

More research.

More things I thought I should be doing.

But that mindset can get exhausting pretty quickly.

What I really want is to be present.

Grounded.

Realistic.

That means paying attention to what my dogs actually need instead of measuring myself against some imaginary version of the perfect dog parent.

Small things still matter

So instead of making big resolutions I probably won’t keep, I’ve been focusing more on things like small adjustments, steady routines, listening to what my dogs are telling me, and tracking the things that actually matter.

And giving myself permission to move at a more realistic pace.

Some days still feel uncertain.

Some days I still wish I had clearer answers.

Some days I’m figuring things out as I go.

But I’m learning that progress doesn’t have to look dramatic.

Sometimes progress is noticing that something is working and continuing with it.

Sometimes it’s changing the plan because your dog’s needs have changed.

Sometimes it’s realizing that today isn’t the day to push for more.

What do you want life with your dog to feel like?

That may be the question I care about more now.

Not, “What do I need to accomplish?”

But…

What do I want everyday life with my dogs to feel like?

Calmer?

More steady?

Less pressure?

More connected?

For me, that kind of reset feels much more useful than another list of resolutions.

It gives us room to breathe… and move forward with our dogs one thoughtful step at a time.
